The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
